Speak the client's business

Manish Kapoor

"Priority 1 incident resolved in 3 hours 40 minutes."

I have read that sentence, or one like it, in more service reports than I can count. It is accurate. It is also not what the client wanted to know.

What the client's leadership wants to hear is different: order processing was down through the Tuesday morning rush, here is what it cost, and here is what we changed so it does not happen again.

The delivery leaders I trust most learn the client's business before they learn the client's systems. How it makes money. Which systems matter at month end. Who inside the client is under pressure this quarter.

Once you know that, the report changes. So do the priorities, the change freezes and the tone of every service review.

Technical skill wins the first contract. Understanding the client's business renews it.

What is one thing about a client's business that changed how you ran their service?
